Nook Wallpapers: Disney Princesses

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Once again my trolling of deviantART has caused my Nook to explode with glorious beauty! Perhaps I went a bit overboard, or perhaps I needed all these. I think the latter. A lot of these I already posted as a Sims 3 download, but whatever, they're just so pretty~!

Links to the original masterpieces can be found under the image. Unless I lost it in which case, shame on me. Thanks Brittany!

Sims 3: A Bad Day on the High Sea & Rosie-Lee's Legacy

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Today I come bearing one item of epic manliness and one item of unadulterated girlishness. Still working on my presentation; I am just plain too lazy to make whole rooms that match the new painting like some crazy people do.

These were cloned from Eaxis meshes using s3oc and edited in s3pe.. Click an image if you wanna see it bigger.

Bad Day on the High Sea by Brandon Bird ♦
You can find this in the obvious place under the above title for $575.

♦ Rosie-Lee's Legacy by Rosie-Lee ♦
All images are together under the above title and available for your Simmies for $115.

Today's my fourth wedding anniversary! Just tossing that out there.

To Market

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

I love the popping when you chew them.
One of the best things about California is the pockets where different cultures flourish. If I want to get the best soda, made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, I go to a Mexican grocery store. If I want a tub of masago to make my favorite nigiri at home (or just eat with a spoon, which I totally do), there's always a Japanese market somewhere within driving distance.

Besides the ability to acquire foods that my walking-distance Ralph's doesn't seem to realize I need, these areas have another bouns: imported goodies!

On Saturday I went with some friends and trolled through Marukai Pacific Market in Redondo Beach, and Mitsuwa Market Place in Torrance, where I treated myself to saki ika, Gummy Chocos, a couple of Iwako erasers, a strawberry tote bag, and some nigiri. While some of these items may be difficult to find, they were entirely reasonably priced; the strawberry tote, for example, was less than half of what I usually see it priced as.

Now this is a Saturday.

Sunday started off innocent enough with a trip to the second annual Renegade Craft Fair, where I purchased the most awesome locket ever, entitled Octopus Tea Party, by Locket 2 You. (Side-story: My companion and I were back-to-back looking at these lockets, and both turned to show each other... the same locket! So we both bought it.) On the way out my all-things-cute buddy notified me that she had never been to Little Tokyo, which is obviously a crime, so we went. I will refrain from listing the many things I bought there, but just being inside the Little Tokyo Mall is happiness, and the bookstore across the street, Kinokuniya, is a great source for Japanese masking tape (I got three rolls of matryoshka, she got some polka dots).

But the real treasure of the weekend, the real thing that inspired this long-winded gushing about the joys of my shallow indulgences, is my new strawberry tea service for one.

The owl mug is from Target's Valentines' Day 2009 collection;
I like to chase my hot tea with cold water for
maximum zen.
I've been looking for a tea service for awhile. I almost went with Decole's Strawberry Cake Mug, which of course only went on sale when they sold out of pink. Then I yearned for Sun Art's Matryoshka Tea for Two, but it is just plain too expensive. This glorious piece of tea-pouring art was very reasonably priced, especially seeing that this one is ten dollars more (after converting Euros to USD). I have spend the last two days guzzling tea, my favorite guilt-free treat.

Moral of this story: Don't be afraid to shun the American shopping malls and big corporate chain stores in favor of these magical little pockets where English isn't a priority.

Also... I couldn't help myself:

The main character, Rui, is a hardworking and happy girl. One day, her neighbor moves away and leaves behind a stuffed panda bear. Rui decided to take it home, since she's always loved panda bears. Review
Based on the title and summary, you would assume this is an adorable little manga about love and a magical stuffed panda. That is part of it, to be sure, but the fluffy little panda storyline seems to quickly take a backseat to the messed up psychological issues of the rest of the characters. This manga gets dark. It's kind of an interesting mix, I suppose--the magical panda doesn't seem to really fit with the overall theme of the story. He's not even the comic relief, really; the interactions between the mentally-screwed yet bishi-rific male characters (see image below) are the funny parts. I am still undecided as to whether the ending is completely perfect or completely unsatisfying. Note my pointed question mark added next to the genre of "romance." Still, though, it's a touching story and the art is pretty.

Note: A bit less than half-way through there is a single chapter side story. Don't get confused!

I Graduated College and All I Got was this Lousy Sense of Entitlement

Friday, July 23, 2010

I have my sulky face on. In fact, it's been showing up more and more often. Today I slept in, rode my bike, practiced Japanese, swam in my pool, and sulked through every moment of all of it. It's the grown-ups again. They promised me that, if I went to college, I'd be rewarded at the end with a lucrative career. Instead I spend my days murdering dust bunnies and cursing the man who, in that smooth voice of his, claimed that the Dyson "doesn't eva lose suction." There's a reason that guy is completely bald. Damn him and damn them all!

It's all very conflicting. On the one hand, damn them all... but, on the other hand, I did just spend my day sleeping in, riding my bike, practicing a foreign language for fun, and swimming in my pool. And housewife cleaning-type things of course. The dust bunnies.

I try to enjoy my current situation, but then I feel guilty for feeling happy while other people, like Poncho, have to wake up early every morning and spend entirely too many of their precious hours working. And then I feel guilty again for not appreciating my abundance of leisure time while other people, like Poncho, have to wake up early every morning and spend entirely too many of their precious hours working.

It's a vicious cycle of shame and guilt. And it's all the grown-ups' fault.

I've been unemployed for thirteen months now. I've applied for many, many jobs.

As I see it, the following things are preventing me from joining the ranks of the employed:

  1. If I'm being honest, I could have a job by now if I were willing to take one that paid me less that I'm receiving on unemployment. It's the sense of entitlement. I graduated college. I'm qualified to teach in any one of the fifty states. And, for a couple of years, I did, and they paid me well. Now the only jobs I seem to be able to get near are barely willing to pay me more than minimum wage; significantly less than I made working day care in college. At times I feel bad about taking money for doing nothing, while at other times I'm too miffed about being laid off from a government job that was supposed to be stable enough to carry me through the next forty years of my life. I could, when it comes down to it, spend all day working to get less money per week than the government will give me for doing nothing. But I'm not a moron.
  2. Many, many jobs I've applied for, when I've followed-up, have given me responses which boil down to, "Just kidding! We weren't really looking to fill a position; we just like to leave job openings all over the place to taunt people like you. Isn't that funny? Ha!" And then I call my psychic friends to put a curse on them.
  3. In this economy, many employers are more interested in your work experience than your education. Which is the exact opposite of what my high school counselor promised me when she convinced me to delay entering the job market to further my education. At least that's who I'm putting the blame on today; tomorrow it'll probably go back to my mother.
  4. The job market is flooded with desperate people, and, as such, I am often told that a potential employer chose someone cheaper or more qualified than me. Which is the real suck part of the whole thing, because what that means is I really am worth barely more than minimum wage.
Or maybe I just plain suck and never realized it before. It's possible.

But the real tragedy in this whole thing is that I have nothing more interesting to write about in my blog. It's Nook, manga, Sims, and whining on the menu until something happens. I miss Japan.

Sims 3: Portrait of a Princess

Thursday, July 22, 2010

These aren't just Disney princesses--these are art. You see there's this hip thing they're doing on deviantART where an artist finds a coloring book page, picks a piece of classic art, and then colors the coloring book page based on the coloring methods used in the classic art piece. With lovely results, I might add.

The princess's name links to the original image. I can't find the Belle though! Ugh, frustrating. Thanks to Brittany for finding Belle for me!

These were cloned from some Eaxis mesh. All ten images are in one file entitled Portrait of a Princess, which can be purchased for your Simmies for $175. Click an image if you wanna see it bigger.

Nook Wallpapers: The Beatles

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

It seems like everyone either loves The Beatles or Elvis--I have rarely come across a person who loves neither or both. I, obviously, am Team Beatles. Defeated Beatles Rock Band in one sitting, I did. It was kinda short though...

Anyway! These are my favorite Beatles bits from deviantART. Artist IDs and links to the originals are under the image.
